Dawn at Frugal For Life has put together a beautiful Festival of Frugality – complete with flowers for May Day! I liked the post on Scarcity and Waste – it applies really well to just about anything, including money. When people feel that they have lots of money (maybe right after payday), they tend to spend more. But when it’s 5 days till payday and there’s $27 left in the checking accnt, it’s amazing how people can make that $27 last. As soon as we get paid, we “spend” a good chunk of the money by putting it into retirement accnts, our HSA, and emergency fund. This doesn’t leave a whole lot left over for other stuff, and it creates a sense of scarcity without actually living paycheck to paycheck.
I also really liked the post about low cost flower beds. We’re planning to do some garden work this weekend, and this post inspired me. My parents xeriscaped their yard last year, and got all the mulch for free. They contacted a tree trimming business and asked – turns out the company was willing to deliver several truckloads of chipped trees to my parents’ house, for free. Just because they asked.
