Last year we sold my engagement ring and put the money into our HSA and my Roth IRA. Since I still liked the look of diamonds, but not the price or the ethical issues, we bought a new ring from Diamond Nexus Labs. It cost $231, and looks just as good a year later as it did when we first got it. I get far more compliments on it than I did on my original $2000 diamond ring, and I actually like this one better.

Last week, I got a gift card in the mail from Diamond Nexus Labs. It’s worth $100, but you have to spend $250 to redeem it. Their stuff is already very reasonably priced – I wish we had known about them when we first went shopping for an engagement ring… then we wouldn’t have had to take a $900 hit when we sold it. There is a ton of great stuff in the $250 range, and with the gift card, it would only cost $150.

I thought about buying a necklace, but I’m just not that much of a fancy jewelry girl. I love my engagement/wedding rings, but everything else I wear tends to be novelty stuff, not diamonds. But for someone who likes diamond jewelry, the gift card could be a lot of fun. So…. I’m going to give it away to one of my readers.   5. That’s a great idea – I’m a girl who loves playing with different accessories, and especially loves sparkle, but I hate that diamonds can create so much war and strife, and I don’t want to promote that with my spending power.

    Plus, it’d be pretty cool to win something like that on my wedding day – I’d probably buy my mom something for all of her help!

  7. We’ve been putting off getting engaged (been together 6.5 years!) due to our frugal-mindedness, and this would be a nice reason to finally do it!

    Things are definitely tight since we just bought our first house last month, and as much as we want to get engaged, the thought of spending a couple grand on rings is daunting!

  11. My boss knows a guy who developed a method for creating synthetic diamonds that are distinguishable from real diamonds only in that they have no flaws whatsoever and are 10 times cheaper. His life was apparently threatened by the diamond cartel since if he started turning these things out en masse, it would devalue the whole market. I wonder if he’s associated with Diamond Nexus?
