The Carnival of All Things Eco is up at Focus Organic. I really enjoyed the post from Elizabeth about hemp production in the US. I’m a huge fan of hemp – it’s sustainable, durable, and can be used for a multitude of purposes (for many of which we currently use petroleum products). We have an old plastic shower curtain in our bathroom. I’ve been thinking about getting a hemp one instead, but the cheapest I found were about $80. Ouch. Then I found a website where I could order hemp by the yard, and figured I could make a shower curtain for about $40 that way (I’ll have to figure out my new sewing machine first). But hemp is still pretty pricey – probably because it still has to be shipped across the ocean! If we could just grow it here, it would be a tremendous resource, and would be far less expensive for American consumers than the European supply we currently have. Thanks for bringing the focus to this Elizabeth!
The Frugal Homesteading Blog has a post about eating local food. I’m a big fan of this, and we have a box of produce delivered every week from a company that works with local farmers throughout the growing season here (we get local stuff from about April through October). I got caught up in this blog and found all sorts of good frugal, simple living stuff… Must go back there when I’m not supposed to be working….

I’m so excited you bought a sewing machine – and aren’t you glad our mother taught us how to sew? The other day I showed a girl at work how to fix a $60 shirt that she had snagged on a nail :-)

I’d love to hear what you decide on your shower curtain! I made the mistake of buying an off-white, synthetic one a couple of years ago, and the bottom is now pink with mildew that won’t wash out (even though I wash it every week!). So I need to replace it, but would like to do it in the most sustainable way possible.
