We had some friends stay at our house last night, so it was a much more exciting Friday night than usual for us. Our friends live a few hours from here, so we don’t see them as often as we’d like. Last time they were here, a few months ago, we ended up going out to dinner at a place that has an attached arcade. By the end of the night, with dinner, drinks, and arcade entertainment, we had spent almost $70, plus whatever they spent. Ouch. We always have a great time with them, but we can’t be spending $70 every time friends come over.
So last night we spent $17 to get everything we needed to make a spaghetti dinner with homemade meatballs and real parmesan cheese and garlic bread. We ate and talked and laughed, and then watched a couple funny tv shows. Then the husbands played Mario Carts on our Nintendo 64. This morning I made gourmet pancakes for everyone – another meal that’s much less expensive to make at home.
We had just as much fun with our friends as we did last time, but we spent a whole lot less money this time.

That sounds like a great way to do it! Mario Kart, cards, DVDs, just chatting…there’s so many ways to be entertained at home.
We tend to spend one night/week with some good friends. So we’ve started taking turns making the dinner to save on going out. Even if it costs the same for one couple, they get to spend nothing the next week, cutting it in half.
