Get Thee To A Thrift Store

February 4, 2009 By Frugal Babe

If you haven’t checked out the Thrifty Chicks blog yet, I highly recommend it.  And if you need extra motivation, they’re giving away awesome thrift store finds this week.   To enter the drawing for a really cool bracelet, all you have to do is pledge to wear an item from a thrift store and leave a comment.  Since just about my entire wardrobe is thrifted, it’s an easy one for me to enter.  I love the Thrifty Chicks and the message they’re spreading.  They’re stylish and classy and big-time thrifters, out to spread the word about thrift stores.  I once showed up at a gathering of girlfriends wearing a marmot vest that I had found at Goodwill.  A friend who is a dedicated Nordstroms shopper commented on how cool it was, and when I told her where I got it, she said that she didn’t think that they had stuff like that at thrift stores.  I think this is a commonly held view among people who haven’t been to a thrift store in the last ten years or so.  I remember some pretty ratty thrift stores from my childhood (and I loved every ratty inch of them, because you never knew when a treasure would be unearthed).  These days they look and feel much more like a regular retail store, except for the price tags.  So if you’re still not on board with the thrift store thing, I urge you to head over to the Thrifty Chicks site and get inspired.

They do have a great blog.

I’ve been thrifting since birth. I think I have 2 things in my closet that were purchased brand new (gasp) and those things were probably on clearance!

It’s a great way to live. And a great message to send to your children. Not only are you being smart with your money, but you’re upholding the green cycle (reduce, reuse, recycle!).

    love your blog!

My thrifting is at yard sales rather than thrift stores, but the thrill of the hunt is the same! Hardest part is not being unbearably smug about my great finds!

Oh how I LOVE thrifting! It’s my favorite way to shop. Although taking my 5 wild little kids along with me definitely takes some of the fun out of it :)

THIS thrifty chick is going to check out The Thrifty Chicks blog! Thanks for the link to their site.

Having just moved to a new town, I recently discovered some *awesome* antique and thrift stores. I bought several sweaters and jewelry and a really fabulous vintage glass swan-shaped centrepeice. I think I got some really wonderful pieces, not to mention the price I paid.

My best find was a gorgeous turtleneck sweater – a good designer – with beautiful embroidered flowers all down the front. The condition it was in, I don’t think it was ever worn! I bought it for $9!

Your thrift-store post inspired me to go thrifting, and I had such fantastic luck stocking up my kids’ too-big clothing boxes, that I came back to leave a 2nd comment about it :)
Am enjoying browsing the Thrifty Chicks site, thanks again for sharing that link!
