Homemade Mouthwash

December 5, 2012 By Frugal Babe

I promised a post about the mouthwash I made last week, so here it is!  This was one of the easiest projects I’ve ever done.  For years, we’ve been buying fancy (ie, expensive) mouth wash with all natural ingredients (no dyes, artificial flavors, etc.), and we’ve been quite happy with them; we also use food-grade hydrogen peroxide as a mouth wash.  The only thing we weren’t happy with was the price.

So last week, I bought some tea tree oil and some xylitol, both of which are main ingredients in some of our favorite mouthwashes.  I spent about $18 on those two ingredients, but I have enough to make A LOT of mouthwash.

That jar is our new mouthwash.  I used a recycled jar and filled it with two cups of water.  Then I added 3 tsp baking soda, 3 tsp xylitol, and 15 drops of tea tree oil.  Shake, and done.

It definitely tastes like tea tree oil, but we’re ok with that.  If you’re not, you could just add a few drops of peppermint oil.

My few teaspoons of xylitol and drops of tea tree oil didn’t even make a dent in the amount I purchased, so I think I’ll be able to make mouthwash for a good long time, without buying anything new.  An added bonus is that we won’t have to keep putting empty plastic bottles in the recycling bin, since I’ll just keep refilling this glass bottle.

Have you tried making your own mouthwash?  What’s your favorite mouthwash ingredient?

This is a great idea! It leads to saving a lot of money and it’s insurance for the environment because you’re not dumping flouride into the water system.
