The Fruits Of Our Hydroponics

October 4, 2008 By Frugal Babe

Earlier this week, my husband added a homemade molasses/seaweed supplement to our hydroponic garden, and we think that we’re already seeing a difference in how the plants look.  They were looking pretty great already, but they seem to be even better now.  We’ve been harvesting greens from the garden since the end of August, and we should be able to start harvesting tomatoes and peppers in the next few weeks.  We set up our system, including planting seeds, the first week in August.  I thought I’d post some pictures of what it looks like now:

Cherry tomatoes that should be turning red anytime now; a bell pepper (there are lots more, but this is the biggest one so far); and a shot of the various greens we have growing (lettuce, bok choy, basil, mustard, swiss chard, and spinach).

As we get into October, outdoor gardens start to fade, and the weather report starts calling for overnight temps in the 30s.  It’s so nice to venture into our crawl space now, and see all the plants growing. (especially since the crawl space used to be a nasty dark pit where we never went unless we had to clean the furnace filter or adjust something on the hot water heater).

I have to say that is pretty crazy impressive. Hard to imagine living on top of a green house! Just imagine if every house was set up like that!

They look yummy Frugal Babe – But doesn’t it get cold in the crawl space when the outside temperature drops? Or does the light keep it warm?

@YP – our crawl space stays pretty warm. The furnace is down there, and being underground helps too. The light puts out quite a bit of heat too – for the last couple months we’ve had a fan on the plants to keep the hot air circulating. We have a space heater down there that we can turn on in the winter if needed. We’ll see how it goes this winter.

Very impressive. And, like you I have been growing my own veggies and flowers in the basement hydroponically for several years. I just love to bend the seasons and fool Mother Nature…
