The Remodeling Continues

March 20, 2008 By Frugal Babe

My husband and I started working on our upstairs floors yesterday.   My parents stopped by and helped us tear out the existing carpet in the baby’s room, which helped a ton, since the carpet was pretty heavy and we’d have had a tough time getting it out by ourselves.   After they left, we removed the millions of staples and tacks from the subfloor, and were able to start laying down the new floor by about 7pm.   We worked until midnight, and have finished about 3/4 of the room.

You know the ads you see on TV for click-together flooring, and they show a nicely dressed lady with a perfect manicure and a big smile, putting her floor together by herself?   Yeah right.   It took us a few hours to get into a good rhythm, although we were doing pretty well by the time we packed it in and went to bed.   We wanted to finish it last night, but my eyes were starting to cross.   The boards are four feet long, and the room is only about 11 feet wide, so we have to cut every third board to the right length, which is the most time-consuming part of the whole thing.   Overall, we’re doing really well -we’ve only messed up two boards, and the floor that we’ve done is looking very nice.

When I look around at the mess we’ve made – everything from the baby’s room is piled in the guest room, our dining room table is still in our living room, and our hallway is full of tools – I question my sanity at taking on these projects all at one time.   But we’re making huge progress, and we both really like the results we’re ending up with.   I know that a few months from now our house is going to look great, and we’ll have everything put back where it belongs.

As for the money part of it, we’re doing very well there too.   The whole floor project in our upstairs is costing about $500, and we did the kitchen for about $3000.    We put about $2000  on the interest-free Home Depot credit card, and we’ve paid for everything as we went along, so we won’t be paying any finance charges for our remodeling.

I am really looking forward to a completely free weekend though.   Maybe we’ll pack a picnic and go hiking…
